Yoga offers many things to many people. It can leave you supple and toned or even, according to some teachers, spiritually enlightened.

It’s the latest thing, and has reshaped the stars from Madonna to Sting.

There are many different forms of yoga - some more physical, some highly spiritual. Overall, yoga is good for stress-related illness, fatigue, migraine, depression, PMS, arthritis, back pain, ageing, and mobility problems.

Decide why you want to start yoga and then choose an appropriate form. The principles of yoga is fairly simple - relax, switch off and stretch, and you’ll feel better.

If you want to get fit…

* Hatha yoga - based on controlled stretching, with an emphasis on developing a flexible spine. Good for all level of fitness.
* Vini yoga - usually taught individually by a teacher call Desikachar. Vini yoga is safe and gentle and this is exceptionally good for older people.

If you want to get physical…

* Lyenger yoga - focuses on correct postures and often uses blocks and ropes to maintain these.
* Sivananda yoga - suitable for all ages, it covers a wide range of poses from simple to complex.
* Ashtanga yoga - known as power yoga. This form is very demanding and is suitable only for the very fit. But if you want ultra-toned muscles like Madonna, give it a go! ;)

If you want to get spiritual…

* Raja yoga - also known as royal yoga. Tis is more concerned with the mind
* Dru yoga - group yoga which concentrates heavily on breath work
* Jnana yoga - concentrates on yoga’s philosophical aspects and is heavily meditative and spritual. This is for those seeking a deeper leve to life.

The practice and study of yoga assist in bringing a sense of balance of body and mind. Most practices in the west focus on the physical side of yoga. Though, yoga offers breathing exercises and meditation as well as harmony to the body. Hatha is the most popular type of yoga. It is a slow-paced discipline that emphasizes controlled breathing and assuming several physical poses. It is said to aid the nervous system, the glands and the vital organs.

The marvellous benefits of yoga begin almost immediately as the mind becomes clear and the body softens. It encourages a sense of inner knowledge and stability.

Yoga Poses

The practice of yoga exercises and poses can improve your health and help to develop your mental awareness. yoga is not just about stretching, its about creating balance through strength and through flexibility. Each pose is designed to ease and soothe the muscles, to tone the internal organs, and to improve flexibility. Along with the proper breathing, they help rid the body of tension.

Yoga only really needs a small amount of space as long as there is enough for you to lie down. It is also recommended to use a mat or folded blanket that will protect your body and make you feel comfortable throughout the yoga practice. There are many yoga props and equipment available to assist and make you as relaxed and comfortable as possible.
